The only way you could put anything under there that is 12" tall would be through the opening behing the headboard!! The space underneath is 12" high, however, the side bar is 2" wide so you have 10" (at a pinch) to slide something under there - unless it's inflatable lol! I also have very thick carpeting so I'm looking at most 9"!Anyway, let's get into the building of the darn thing! First of all the biggest tool you need is a sense of humor! The booklet tells you the numbers of the parts so you open up each different package and - no kidding at all - it looks like someone gave a child some numbered stickers because nothing matches the diagrams!! Some parts had more than one number but some had none - my daughter and I were just in fits laughing! Luckily this is not our first 'rodeo' so common sense won out and we put it together quite easily.Despite the diminished promised storagw space for my needs, my cat loves the space - she's small so she can run under it and is quite happy that it's not full of boxes! Actually I'm happy about that too as I can now put a cat bed under for when we have bad storms!I would recommend this to anyone who can overcome the above 'cause it's really a nice bed frame!
